hortly after opening his own
family law practice, Mr. Kramer’s
practice became the subject of
national recognition after he
successfully used a California
paternity action to enable Mr.Sean
Sessums Means to become a
recognized beneficiary of the most
storied and largest trusts in U.S.
History, The Doris Duke Trust. The
Trustor of the Dorris Duke Trust, Mr.
James B. Duke was the founder of
American Tobacco Company and
Duke Power Company, and the
namesake of Duke University. He
also was the father of Ms. Doris Duke who upon the untimely death of her father was known as the “richest little girl in world.” Although Sean was a “lineal descendant” of Mr. James Buchanan Duke, The Doris Duke Trust was unaware of Sean’s existence until he turned 25 years old. As a result of Brian’s work, Sean became the first person to ever be recognized as a beneficiary of the Doris Duke Trust decades after his birth.
Sean’s rags-to-riches case included civil rights issues that caught the attention of Ms. Oprah Winfrey. Oprah was so intrigued by the story that she published an 8-page article in her O Magazine publication. In that story, Oprah traces how Sean’s chance encounter with Brian resulted in the formation of a most unlikely attorney-client relationship that would indelibly impact Sean’s life. The article entitled “An Unlikely Inheritance” is posted on Oprah’s website and can be accessed by clicking here.
The Duke family historian, Mr. D.W.
Duke, dedicated a chapter in his
book The Duke Legacy to Sean’s
case. Mr. D.W. Duke was so moved
by Sean’s case that he invited
Sean, a skilled artist, to design the
cover of his book. You can read
Chapter 15 from this book regarding
Sean's incredible story clicking
